CARD NUMBER 15. – Illness. The Magician (Aarob).

Upright. – Physical and mental disorders, grief, sadness.

Reversed. – Illness that could have been avoided. Confrontation.

A Breath of Fresh Air

In a world that is oftentimes adverse to that which it cannot easily explain, it can be difficult to allow one’s creativity to flow without worry of stirring up backlash. However, this only holds us back from our greatest creations; after all, innovation would not exist without the curiosity to explore the unknown! The Magician appreciates all that cannot be explained, and is comfortable letting his intuition guide him forward even when there is no concrete explanation for why he feels the need to pursue this specific plan of action. He does not let himself be deterred by the negative opinions of others, and instead takes great pride in his ability to inject vitality into an otherwise stagnant situation.

You are much like The Magician, and allow your curiosity to lead you forward down the path of innovation and creativity that others tend to shy away from. This has led you to great discoveries, and you enjoy nothing more than finding something new and exciting to spice up worn-out traditions. The response that you receive from others in regard to this aspect of your personality are mixed; while some praise your creativity and ability to lead the way into the unknown, others have chastised you for your unwillingness to stick with conventional beliefs and practices. However much these opinions may sting, they are no reason for you to curb your enthusiasm for exploring the unknown. Surround yourself with people who support your curious nature, and disregard the disapproval of those that are stuck in their ways. Don’t let them goad you into arguments on your reasoning; it is okay to not necessarily know why you are drawn towards a specific type of exploration. You don’t owe an explanation to anyone as to why you act the way that you do.

One of the most exciting things about romance is trying new things; whether this be starting new relationships, having new experiences with a partner, or learning new things about how you function in a romantic relationship, each new connection is going to send you headfirst into a series of “firsts“. This may seem slightly intimidating at first, especially if they are things that you have seen many people around you experiencing, and you feel as though you’ve been left out of the loop.

However, now is the time to let yourself embark fearlessly along the path of newness that your current romantic situation has presented to you. Is there something that you’ve always wanted to try with a partner? Somewhere you’ve always wanted to go? Or maybe there is someone that you are interested in initiating a relationship with, but you aren’t sure if they’d even be interested in reciprocating your feelings. Take this as a sign to move forward without hesitation; don’t worry about the “why’s” or “how’s“, just focus on doing whatever your heart tells you to do. What you need right now is a partner that is fluid and adaptable, and who is willing to go along with your curious and adventurous nature. It is not the time to let yourself be held back by a partner that tries to force you to slow down, pressuring you into a state of stagnation and conformity with tradition.

ONE. THE MAGICIAN

A youthful figure in the robe of a magician, having the countenance of divine Apollo, with smile of confidence and shining eyes. Above his head is the mysterious sign of the Holy Spirit, the sign of life, like an endless cord, forming the figure 8 in a horizontal position ∞. About his waist is a serpent-cincture, the serpent appearing to devour its own tail. This is familiar to most as a conventional symbol of eternity, but here it indicates more especially the eternity of attainment in the spirit. In the Magician’s right hand is a wand raised towards heaven, while the left hand is pointing to the earth.

This dual sign is known in very high grades of the Instituted Mysteries; it shows the descent of grace, virtue and light, drawn from things above and derived to things below. The suggestion throughout is therefore the possession and communication of the Powers and Gifts of the Spirit. On the table in front of the Magician are the symbols of the four Tarot suits, signifying the elements of natural life, which lie like counters before the adept, and he adapts them as he wills. Beneath are roses and lilies, the flos campi and lilium convallium, changed into garden flowers, to show the culture of aspiration.

This card signifies the divine motive in man, reflecting God, the will in the liberation of its union with that which is above. It is also the unity of individual being on all planes, and in a very high sense it is thought, in the fixation thereof. With further reference to what I have called the sign of life and its connection with the number 8, it may be remembered that Christian Gnosticism speaks of rebirth in Christ as a change “unto the Ogdoad.” The mystic number is termed Jerusalem above, the Land flowing with Milk and Honey, the Holy Spirit and the Land of the Lord. According to Martinism, 8 is the number of Christ.

What most people want from their career is consistent income and a sense of economic stability. Although we are taught from a young age to prioritize our dreams an aspirations, many are willing to set them aside so as to earn a paycheck that will support their day-to-day life. Unfortunately, this has led to many allowing themselves to stagnate in dead-end careers that bring them very little joy and offer no real creative outlets. In many cases, the career that we see ourselves enjoying the most may not necessarily be able to pay our bills, and economic constraints are the biggest hindrance on our collective ability to pursue each of our individual passions. Breaking out of this cycle can be extremely difficult, and for some, it may even seem downright impossible.

Now is the time for you to pursue your dreams, even if you don’t necessarily know how you are going to reach them. All you need to do is figure out what the first step is going to be and move forward from there, rolling with the punches as they are thrown at you. Don’t let the fear of the unknown push you to inaction; you will never get any closer to your dreams if you are too afraid to act on them. Instead, have faith that your passion and drive will lead you exactly where you need to go in order to find success in your chosen field. However, this does not mean that you should be totally unrealistic and throw yourself blindly into the unknown. Don’t quit your current job if you have no way of supporting yourself otherwise, and don’t invest too much of your time and resources into something that could leave you penniless should it fail. Start slow and gradually increase you investment in this endeavor until it produces enough to sustain your lifestyle. Then, you will be able to cut ties with your current situation.

By suppressing the curiosity to explore the unknown, you are only holding yourself back from making new discoveries that would otherwise never see the light of day. When The Magician appears in the reversed position, it may be a sign that you are holding yourself back from following your creative desires and intuition.

You already know that you have been holding yourself back, as it has most likely resulted in a state of discontent as you are forcing yourself to conform with tradition and long-standing conventions. Take a moment to really consider why you are disallowing yourself from pursuing your curious nature. Is it because you fear the disapproval of others?

Don’t place so much importance on external opinions; their closemindedness will only prevent them from reaping the rewards of your innovation. Are you afraid of that which you don’t understand, and are unsure of whether or not you can properly justify your desired course of explanation? Not every question needs a response that is easily put into words; some of the most fundamental questions of life don’t have a concreate answer, and yet we praise the ancient philosophers that are known for contemplating them.

The Magician represents manifestation. You are limitless in your potential, and you have the drive and determination to see anything through. Your ideas become reality as you give birth to wondrous ideas that you are more than capable of turning into reality. The Magician is a strong  YES.
