Temperance as Advice
“If you turn a bling eye to the world now, history will turn a blind eye to you later. Ignoring an issue makes you a tacit supporter of it.” – Stewart Stafford
Practice Self-Control
Life is full of temptations. Most of the time, the things that we are most tempted to do tend to have the least desirable long-term affects. While they may offer immediate pleasure, they do very little to benefit us in the future, and may even stand to do great harm. We often feel tempted due to the fact that we have a feeling of want or lacking, and we attempt to fill that void with shallow gratification. However, this does very little to enrich our lives in the ways that we need it most. In order to truly fill the blank space that may be troubling us, we must take a deeper look into what it is that we are missing.
The Temperance card indicates that you are missing something of great value to you, and you are attempting to fill the void that it has left behind with superficial pleasures that wear off quickly and tend to do more harm than good. While you may not immediately realize it, you have much work to do in order to grow past these temptations. Have faith; these desires will pass once you are able to address the root issue at hand. The first step is to identify the impulsive behaviors that you tend to indulge in. Do you drink a little too much in an attempt to avoid the thoughts that come with being sober? Do you seek validation from others so as to build up your self-esteem, only to fall back into a state of self-loathing when you don’t receive constant compliments and attention?
Once you are able to identify these behaviors, you will be able to gain a better insight into what you are lacking, and therefore will be far more capable of getting what you need. Be open to the fact that addressing the underlying issue will be far more difficult than simply ignoring it. Allow yourself to feel all of the emotions that come with this sense of lacking, and use it as fuel to keep pushing through the struggles that you may need to face in order to resolve it.
Temperance meaning for a Relationship
It is always far better to be single for the right reasons than in a relationship for the wrong ones. While we may not always be willing to admit it, we may sometimes allow ourselves to enter into a relationship because we are far more afraid of being alone. This can lead to toxicity and abuse, and more often than not, it isn’t worth the temporary validation that it provides.
In your fear of being alone, you may be pushing your affections onto someone that isn’t worth the attention. Perhaps you are in a relationship with a partner that does not reciprocate your dedication, or is even downright abusive. Or maybe you allow yourself to be easily roped into romantic flings in the hope that something will stick, leading to a vicious cycle of disappointment and heartbreak. This is a sign that you are attempting to fill an inner void with the affection of others; even if you were to receive what you think you want, it will not solve the root issue. There are a variety of reasons that people seek relationships to fill an inner void: poor self-esteem, the fear of being alone, the fear of being unwanted or unloved, or even impatience in the search for “the one”.
Take a moment to step back and consider why you so desperately want a romantic relationship. You may find that the underlying issue is far too big for you to handle on your own; there is nothing wrong with needing a little help. Instead of continuing to subject yourself to stressful situations in your romantic life, consider reaching out to the rest of your support system for assistance. Once you have worked through these issues, you will find that you are far more capable of making long lasting, meaningful relationships.
Temperance Classic interpretation by A.E.Waite
FOURTEEN. TEMPERANCE
A winged angel, with the sign of the sun upon his forehead and on his breast the square and triangle of the septenary. I speak of him in the masculine sense, but the figure is neither male nor female. It is held to be pouring the essences of life from chalice to chalice. It has one foot upon the earth and one upon waters, thus illustrating the nature of the essences. A direct path goes up to certain heights on the verge of the horizon, and above there is a great light, through which a crown is seen vaguely. Hereof is some part of the Secret of Eternal Life, as it is possible to man in his incarnation. All the conventional emblems are renounced herein.
So also are the conventional meanings, which refer to changes in the seasons, perpetual movement of life, and even the combination of ideas. It is, moreover, untrue to say that the figure symbolizes the genius of the sun, though it is the analogy of solar light, realized in the third part of our human triplicity. It is called Temperance, fantastically, because, when the rule of it obtains in our consciousness, it tempers, combines and harmonizes the psychic and material natures. Under that rule we know in our rational part something of whence we came and whither we are going.
Temperance meaning for your Job & Career
Overworking is oftentimes a result of dissatisfaction with our lives outside of our careers. Especially in cases where we feel as though we have little control over the circumstances of our lives, we throw ourselves into work so as to hold on to some semblance of authority. We feel as though we are capable in what we are doing, have enough experience to make well-informed decision, and are providing ourselves with the funds needed to support ourselves financially. We become so engrossed in the work process and the benefits that we can glean from it that we begin to forget what it is like to truly live outside of the workplace.
You have been dissatisfied with your personal life as of late, and have learned to cope with the stress and dissatisfaction by dedicating the majority of your time and attention to your career. While there is nothing wrong with being passionate about your work, there is a level where your obsession becomes toxic and holds you back from living your life to the fullest. You may be working an excessive number of hours, and even find yourself thinking about work in your off time. If you aren’t currently employed, you may be obsessively looking into potential job opportunities, and become incredibly frustrated when you are unable to get a job that you may have had your eyes on.
Take a moment to rest and step back; what are you running away from by drowning yourself in work? As intimidating as it may seem, you need to address this issue in order to move forward with your life. However, you don’t need to face it alone. Get in touch with your support system and tell them how you’ve been struggling recently. Don’t let yourself get distracted with busywork and a hyperfixation on productivity; stay focused on working on the more important situation at hand.
Reversed Temperance (in depth)
There are times where the constant feeling of want, when coupled with the inability to receive, can lead to utter hopelessness. When the Temperance tarot card appears in the reversed position, it may be a sign that you are starting to feel as though the struggle is no longer worth it, and you are losing your motivation to keep going. Perhaps you want nothing more than unconditional love, but find that even those who you thought you were closest to have a tendency to rescind their affections. Or maybe you desire inner peace with your physical appearance, but are constantly reminded that you don’t fit conventional beauty standards. This mindset can be incredibly destructive, and it may feel as though it is impossible to break this cycle of negative thinking.
Now is the time for you to focus on what makes you truly happy; there is no way to magically cure this inner struggle, but you can manage the symptoms that come with it. When you find yourself falling back into these thoughts, make a conscious effort to bring your attention to something else. What can you do to improve your mood? Try busying yourself with a hobby, or reach out to a friend or family member that you enjoy talking to. When you may a concerted effort to fill your mind with positive things, you will find that it is much easier to keep going in the face of great struggle.
