CARD NUMBER 45. – Five of Cups.

This card is traditionally representative of a particularly tumultuous time in our lives, such as in the case of sudden and devastating loss, or when one is forced to deal with the consequences of large upheavals in the status quo. Coping with loss is one of the hardest things that we will need to face during our lifetimes. This may be the loss of a loved one, the end of a long-term relationship, financial hardship, or the loss of a peaceful environment to live in. You may also be on the cusp of losing something, and it may feel as though there is nothing you can do to stop it. 

It can be particularly frustrating when these changes are not your fault; oftentimes, it can feel as though you try your hardest, only to be knocked down by forces that you have no power to control or influence. Even in the face of these hardships, there is a silver lining to the pain that you are currently experiencing. This may be a sign that you are focusing too much of your time and energy into grieving what you have lost, as opposed to appreciating what you still have left. 

It is tough to move on, but there is a point where you have to sever the attachments that you have to the things that you have lost. Shift your attention to nurturing the things and connections that you still have; you will find that things are not as hopeless as they seem.

Things have not been smooth sailing in your romantic life as of late. You may be struggling with the loss of a relationship, or a rejection from someone that you were hoping to start a relationship with. In coping with the pain of this development, it has been easy to fall into a cycle of depression and rage. It seems as though you can’t get your mind off of what could have been, as opposed to what you have come out of it with. If someone is not willing to maintain a romantic relationship with you, then it is a sign that they were not meant to be yours. 

You may have had good times together, but the portions of your life that were meant to overlap have now passed. This is normal, and it is natural; there are very few people that are meant to stay in our lives for extended periods of time. Take a step back and look at the person that has emerged from this situation; imagine how beautiful they are in the eyes of others! There is happiness out there for you, even if it seems like the romantic spark in your life has fizzled out. 

Think of all of the potential partners out there that you now have the freedom to pursue! Your perfect person is out there, but sometimes we have to go through a few speedbumps before we reach our final destination.

You may also be facing a particularly tumultuous time in your professional life. You may have recently lost your job, been demoted, gotten into a spot of hot water with your superiors or coworkers, or even be struggling with a period of chronic unemployment. 

With job struggles come financial issues; you may be simultaneously trying to cope with the stressors that come with economic instability. At these times, it is particularly easy to fall into cycles of negative thinking, which only serve to bring your mood down even further. There are times where this emotional turmoil stems from the inability to meet the expectations placed upon you in the work environment. However, now is the time for you to reevaluate the source of these expectations; who is it that is demanding you to achieve these things? 

Do you push yourself to complete a certain amount of work each day that is significantly more than the expectations of your position? Or perhaps you do everything in your power to make a certain amount of income each month, resulting in an extended period of overwork and exhaustion. 

Notice the common denominator; you. You may be placing unnecessary expectations on yourself that are causing a large amount of the stress that you are currently facing in the work environment. Take some time to relax your expectations, and appreciate the things that you already have as opposed to what you don’t.

Oftentimes, things have to get much worse before they can begin to improve. When The 5 of Cups appears in the reversed position, it may be a sign that you have reached such a scenario. The possibility of worse circumstances is nothing for you to fear; once you acknowledge the fact that they may happen, you will be far better equipped to adapt. 

While it is important to avoid anticipating the worst, as it may lead to a chronically negative cycle of thinking, keeping a realistic set of expectations will protect you from unwanted surprises and make even the littlest improvements seem monumental.

The five of cups is a NO card – it is plagued by grief and hurt. A bad omen for love, possible breakup. A lot of emotional baggage. You may have feelings for an ex. Look for comfort in friendships. This card means a lot of negative emotions, nevertheless – look for the light at the end of the tunnel.
